Disney was founded on October 16, 1923, by Walt Disney and Roy Disney. The brothers originally named it Walt Disney Studios and Productions, but they decided to call in The Walt Disney Company in 1986. In 1928, Disney established itself as a leader in the animation industry with the short film steamboat Willie. The film became the first cartoon to produce sound and popularized Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse became Disney's mascot and corporate icon and has been since. After becoming a major success outlet, Disney expanded into live-action films, television, and theme parks in the 1950s.
